B.A. in Spanish in the Professions
Find the Flexibility and Support to Achieve your Goals
Students will have the flexibility and faculty support to design a course of study that will help them achieve their educational and professional goals. For some students this may mean a Spanish education major, for others a double major in Spanish and Marketing or a minor in Spanish with a major in Psychology. The faculty in the Language and Literature Department is committed to working closely with our majors and other departments to offer courses that deliver a rigorous and purposeful learning experience.

This option is intended primarily for those students who plan to make use of the Spanish language in a professional environment other than teaching. It requires a minimum of 42-45 credit hours (24 in Spanish, 21 in other discipline).
- Students demonstrate advanced proficiency in Spanish for professional communication across interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes. Graduates will achieve at least in speaking and writing, and Advanced Mid or higher in reading and listening. They will communicate effectively in professional settings by producing reports, presentations, and workplace correspondence in Spanish.
- Students analyze and apply cultural knowledge and linguistic skills to professional contexts in the Spanish-speaking world and U.S. Spanish-speaking communities. Graduates will evaluate cultural perspectives, practices, and communication norms relevant to fields such as business, healthcare, public service, and community engagement. They will adapt language and communication strategies to diverse professional and intercultural environments.
- Students apply critical thinking, ethical judgment, and problem-solving skills in multilingual professional settings. Graduates will analyze complex issues affecting Spanish-speaking communities and develop culturally informed responses through research, collaboration, and professional communication. They will demonstrate ethical responsibility, cultural sensitivity, and professionalism when engaging with diverse populations and institutions.
